The Pier E Container Yard – Intermodal Railyard project was the final phase of the Port of Long Beach’s $1.5 billion Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project, creating one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly shipping terminals in the world. The Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) will have a capacity of 3.3 million 20-foot cargo container units and can offload three ships simultaneously with fully electric systems. Spanning over 100 acres, the construction involved significant earthwork, underground utilities, asphalt paving, concrete, and rail elements, including moving over 400,000 cubic yards of earth, installing extensive water and drainage systems, and laying nearly 10 miles of railroad track. TQF worked on this team via subsurface imaging, special inspection, environmental compliance, materials testing, and QC/QA inspection.
