Project Summary

SAN Terminal 1 (T1), which commenced operations in 1967, has experienced an increase in passenger traffic from 2.5 million annually to over 12 million annually. To address the aging infrastructure and accommodate passenger growth, a new 1.2 million-square-foot terminal with up to 30 gates will replace T1. The new terminal will offer more gate area seating, restaurants, and shops, as well as additional security checkpoints with more lanes and energy-efficient upgrades. To maintain airport functionality throughout the project, construction for this project was split into two phases. Phase 1A will include: 19 gates; an elevated departure roadway; outdoor check-in pavilions; a dedicated on-airport arrivals roadway; and a five-story parking plaza. The earliest opening for the first phase is in mid- 2025. Phase 1B will add the remaining 11 gates with the earliest opening in late 2027. The new T1 will feature: pre-and-post security passenger connectors to Terminal 2; up to 5,200 parking space; a security checkpoint with 13 lanes; an outdoor patio area; up to two airlines or common-use lounges/clubs and a children’s play area; a dual-level roadway and curb front to separate arriving and departing passenger traffic with an elevated departures roadway; and curbside check-in will also be integrated into the new terminal. Designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the redesigned taxiways and underground fuel-delivery system will be included as energy-efficient features for the project.
