Project Summary

The Purple Line Extension, previously referred to as the Westside Subway Extension, aims to expand the Purple Line by nine miles from its current endpoint at Wilshire/Western to Los Angeles' "second downtown," running through Beverly Hills, Century City, and Westwood. Upon completion of the project's three sections, seven new stations will be added, which will be carried out using the design-build delivery approach. Section 1 spans 3.9 miles along the Miracle Mile towards Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards, featuring three stations. Section 2 covers 2.6 miles from La Cienega to Century City, with two stations. Section 3 stretches 2.9 miles through Westwood to the VA Hospital. The extension involves the development of twin tunnels with a width of about 20 feet, placed 50-70 feet below ground level, via the cut and cover method. Section 1's stations will be located at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. Moreover, 34 new heavy rail vehicles, compatible with the current system, will be procured for Section 1. There will also be enhancements to the current Division 20 Rail Maintenance and Storage Yard to accommodate the extra vehicles.
